Desiccant refers to substances that can remove moisture from moist substances, and is often divided into two categories: chemical desiccants, such as calcium chloride, are dried by combining with water to form hydrates; physical desiccants, such as silica gel, is dried by physical adsorption of water. Let's take a look at the common desiccants as follows.
Silica gel desiccant also known as moisture-proof beads, of which the main component is silicon dioxide, which is purified and processed by natural minerals through acidification treatment into translucent or yellowish granules or beads. As a desiccant, it is a physical reaction that absorbs water according to the fine seams between the numerous micro-molecules of the silica gel particle itself, so it has the characteristics of stable chemical properties, safety and non-toxicity, and high hygroscopic ability. It is also designated by the US Food FDA agency, a desiccant that can come into direct contact with food.
Mineral desiccant is composed of several natural minerals and has the appearance of off-white pellets. The moisture absorption rate is more than 50%, which is twice that of ordinary silica gel. Made of pure natural raw material minerals and active hygroscopic agent, it is green and environmentally friendly, non-toxic and tasteless, and does not harm the human body. The product has good adsorption performance at room temperature and general humidity.
Montmorillonite clay is a naturally occurring adsorbent created by the controlled drying of magnesium aluminum silicate of the subbentonite type. This clay will successfully regenerate for repeated use at very low temperatures without substantial deterioration or swelling. However, this property causes clay to desorb moisture readily back into the container as temperatures rise. Clay is inexpensive and highly effective within normal temperature and relative humidity ranges.
Calcium oxide, also known as "quicklime" or "unslaked lime", is a slow, but strong adsorbent. It is efficient at low humidities and can drop moisture vapor to below 10% relative humidity. Qucklime is caustic and must be carefully handled, particularly with regards to dust inhalation and exposure to skin and eyes. It expands as it soaks up water vapor and this must be taken into account when packaging it. It will adsorb up to about 28% of its weight in moisture, but it does slowly over a period of several days rather than a matter of hours like other desiccants. It is most effective when used in high humidity environment where a very low humidity level is desired. It will release a fair amount of heat if exposed to direct moisture or extreme humidities.
According to the unique adsorption principle of activated carbon bag, high-quality coconut shells, fruit shells and wood chips are selected as raw materials. After high temperature activation and special pore size adjustment process, it has a vast specific surface area and rich in the microporous structure, which can effectively remove the odor and moisture in various packaging products. The moisture-proof and deodorizing effect of activated carbon desiccant is obvious, for packaging, storage, transportation and other processes.
